Belinda GilesThough she began her tertiary education in mathematics and finished it as an industrial designer, Belinda was drawn at last to jewellery out of a love for working with metal. She studied silversmithing under the accomplished Swiss master Ernst Pfenninger, bringing with her ideas borrowed from fields as diverse as scientific illustration and mass manufacture - and a strong preoccupation with numbers. Belinda incorporates concepts from mathematics in nature into the organic lines of her jewellery. Having exhibited a bench at the Milan Furniture Fair, several commissions led her to start her own business while still at university.
Her first piece of silver jewellery received a Georg Jensen design award. Since her range's debut she has been kept busy with a string of jewellery commissions, as well as exhibitions in Germany and Sydney.
To satisfy demand from collectors of her pieces, Belinda is now working on new designs which are entirely her own and will be made available through her suppliers. The greater public availability of her work will mark an opportunity for a wider audience to own one of her pieces. Her work is characterised by an inventive simplicity, meticulously executed with a distinctive blend of modern and traditional techniques.
With a passionate talent for good design and a compellingly original style, Belinda Giles is the young Australian jewellery designer to watch out for.
